We have come to the end of our 2 week project here in Kampong Mangkok, in Situ, Terengganu. Over the course of our 2 weeks here, we have impacted the lives of many, from the lives of the people to even the lives of turtles. We have released many turtle hatchlings over the 2 weeks, recovered close to 500 eggs laid by turtles. We have also bettered the community in Kampong Mangkok by improving the lives of 5 people. Mdm Rokiah, by building her a new front porch. Mdm Zainab, by building her a new front porch. Azam, by building him a new front porch. Mdm Zuraina Chik, by building her son a room for a barbershop.   Mdm Rohayu, by building the foundations for her new front porch. Mdm Rosnita, by building the foundations for her new toilet. But that's not all, stay tuned for updates on our post project event and for interesting turtle news! Yours in Scouting, Team Orion VIII

Warm Greetings from Setiu, Terengganu! Our team started off the day by kick starting the construction of Kak Ta's toilet. We spent the first half of today by constructing the toilet. We spent long hours under the hot sun trying to complete as much of the toilet as we could. Although we did not manage to complete the toilet all of us were contempt with the progress we have made over the course of the trip During the second half of the day we prepared to break fast with the villagers by helping them prepare food. The picture below shows Bryan and Andrew preparing caramel pudding kampong style   In a Project Orion First, we conducted an eye check up on the villagers. Below you can see our skilled Optometrist Kar Mun at work  Finally breaking fast with the villagers after a hard day's work This sums up our exciting day   Stay tuned for more Project Orion VIII action!!!

Day 10 - Of Expediteness and Excavations

Image
Warm Greetings from Setiu, Terengganu! Our day began once again with a delicious breakfast served hot and fresh at Kak Ta's House, energizing us for the day ahead. After Breakfast we headed over across the road to Zainab's house, where Pak Lam, a local carpenter, helped us out to replace her old, crumbling porch and install a brand new one in its stead. The work was standard and routine: this was our last porch of the trip. The work was surprisingly quick this time; with Pak Lam's help and our prior experience we managed to complete the whole porch much earlier than expected: before lunchtime. Our afternoon was intended to be devoted to building Zainab's porch. We headed back to the Pink House to try flying our Wau kites again. At around 4:00 p.m., we received a call from WWF representatives informing us that we could do a turtle excavation. They picked us up in their truck, and brought us to the turtle hatch

Day 9 - Rohayu's Porch

Image
Greeting from Terengganu! We started the day with some scrumptious bee hoon goreng at Kak Ta's house. We then headed off to Rohayu's house to build a porch. Pre-Porch Today's porch building was a bit different as Pak Awang who usually helps us was at another job so he could only drop by to do the measurements for us. When he finished up we began digging holes. As the pillar manufacturer ran out of pillars of a certain height we had order a pillar that was longer than the others. For this pillar we had to dig a deeper hole. We learnt that the difficulty of hole digging increases exponentially with its depth as the distance between you and the bottom of the hole is greater causing you to have to bend down more and carry the dirt a longer distance as well. When we finished digging the hole and put the pillar in we realized that Pak Awang who had left actually wanted us to measure the depth of the hole from the ground and not from the guiding strings that were set-up mea

Day 8 - Wau and Walls

Image
Day 8 started very early at around 12am. We were making banana chips that we have ordered to bring back home. We ordered a total of 61 packets of banana chips that made us spend the whole night peeling, slicing, frying and packaging them and we slept at about 3 am. We woke up at 8:30am and Kak Ta came and delivered Nasi Lemak for breakfast and we had teh O to wash it down. Kak Ta came with three of her sons Rizal, Ikwan and Iman. Her sons came to teach us how to tie a traditional moon kite called a Wau.  We then cycled to Kak Ta house for a simple lunch consisting of rice, fried chicken, soup and vegetables. We quickly proceeded to Mdm Zuraina house to finish up the barber shop that the son has requested us to build. Aadhi led us with the mixing of the cement which we slowly spread and stacked the bricks to build the wall.  Thats all for day 8. Day 7 - Day of Cooking and Eating

Image
Day 7 - 16th June 2017 Hello from Team Orion VIII!! We started our day at Kak Ta's kitchen with yummy fried noodles and crispy keropok before we head back to Pink House the start of our cooking day! First on our menu today was Banana Chips! Banana chips is a local snack that is well known in Terengganu, and local here love eating and making them. So....today we learnt how to make this delicious snack that we can't stop munching on. Step 1: Cut the skin off unripped banana (Green Banana) It looked pretty easy to cut off the banana skin in this picture, but trust me, looks are deceiving. We took quite awhile to cut the skin without wasting the bananas and to ensure that all banana skins were cut off. This is us trying not to cut our fingers and skinning the banana. Step 2: Slice the bananas as thin as possible using this blade board. This is the most scary step for most of us, as the blades were pretty sharp. We sliced the banana cautiously to prevent slicing ou
