Day 1 - Ghost Crabs and Cats

Greetings from Seitu, Terengganu!

After we touched down at the Terengganu Airport we headed to a local hypermart, Mydin to acquire our logistics. We split into pairs and set off in the maze of a hypermart, we originally allocated 15 minutes to finds the logistics and gather back but instead we took more than double of the allocated time. But we managed to buy the necessary items so it all worked out.

Finishing at the hypermart we finally headed off to The Pink House. We took a sick "Tumblr photo" at the front yard and then we took a group picture by balancing the thousand dollar camera on a bunch of bricks.

After arriving we packed our logistics and cleaned up the pink house.

We then held a meeting with Pewanis to discuss and go through the activities that we will be undertaking over the next two weeks. A cat that lives under the Pink House came and joined the meeting. We managed to have a productive meeting discussing and confirming most of the community projects we are to undertake.

After the meeting we headed off to the beach. Si Jie introduced to some of the common creatures that can be found along the beach. We learned about how ghost crabs predate on turtles and how ant lion larvas hide in concentric holes waiting for its prey to come by before spurting out more sand to cause it to fall into the hole. It was educational and for many of us it helped us to better appreciate the place.

Since it was getting close to dinner time we left the beach and went to Kak Ta's house to have our dinner. We were treated to rice, sautéed vegetables and some omelettes. We were also  pleasantly surprised by yet another cat.

Warm Greetings from Setiu, Terengganu! Our day began once again with a delicious breakfast served hot and fresh at Kak Ta's House, energizing us for the day ahead. After Breakfast we headed over across the road to Zainab's house, where Pak Lam, a local carpenter, helped us out to replace her old, crumbling porch and install a brand new one in its stead. The work was standard and routine: this was our last porch of the trip. The work was surprisingly quick this time; with Pak Lam's help and our prior experience we managed to complete the whole porch much earlier than expected: before lunchtime. Our afternoon was intended to be devoted to building Zainab's porch. We headed back to the Pink House to try flying our Wau kites again. At around 4:00 p.m., we received a call from WWF representatives informing us that we could do a turtle excavation. They picked us up in their truck, and brought us to the turtle hatch...

Day 2 - Of Hatchlings and Hellos

Greetings for Trengganu, Malaysia!!! Today is the second day of our project. Today we spent the day familiarising ourselves with the friendly people here and also the various project sites. The day started off with a briefing about the Setiu Wetlands as well as about the types of turtles found at Trengganu Watching a video about the efforts of turtle conservation by the locals and the WWF Entering the hatchery  The staff educating us about the various parts in the hatchery  We freed a late blooming turtle during excavation :) Luqman, a WWF officer showing us the proper method to excavate the fragile eggs  Abbas getting a feel of how excavation is done   Relaxing on a hammock after a fun filled day  This concludes todays activities, stay tuned for more PO VII action tomorrow !

Project Orion VIII - Post Event

Greetings Brother and Sister Scouts! On the 26th of August we had our post event for Project Orion VIII. The event was hosted by Team Orion VIII and we conducted a day full of activities for the Cub Scouts of 5 different schools. (North View, Mee Toh, De La Salle, Rosyth, Kheng Cheng) We began the day by having small icebreakers between each unit and one patrol mentor from Team Orion VIII.
