Day 9 - Rohayu's Porch

Greeting from Terengganu!

We started the day with some scrumptious bee hoon goreng at Kak Ta's house. We then headed off to Rohayu's house to build a porch.

Pre-Porch

Today's porch building was a bit different as Pak Awang who usually helps us was at another job so he could only drop by to do the measurements for us. When he finished up we began digging holes. As the pillar manufacturer ran out of pillars of a certain height we had order a pillar that was longer than the others. For this pillar we had to dig a deeper hole. We learnt that the difficulty of hole digging increases exponentially with its depth as the distance between you and the bottom of the hole is greater causing you to have to bend down more and carry the dirt a longer distance as well. When we finished digging the hole and put the pillar in we realized that Pak Awang who had left actually wanted us to measure the depth of the hole from the ground and not from the guiding strings that were set-up meaning we had to remove the pillar and make the hole ten inches deeper. We also had to dig holes for and place two additional pillars. When pillars were placed into the holes we had dug he side would scrape against the side of the hole and cause sand to fall into it. This caused the hole to become shallower. In the end we had to either tilt the pillar and dig the dirt out of the side or lean it against the side of the hole and dig dirt form under it lit again. All of this was exhausting to say the least.

After Lunch
By the time we got back to Kak Ta's house for lunch we had our meal and then slept.

After our nap we had to head back to Rohayu's house again to continue the porch building. This time Pak Awang was there to help. We had to remove the dirt over the base of the pillars so Pak Awang could straighten the pillars. However since the pillars were already inside of the hole the shovel which had larger heads became too cumbersome to utilize. Thus we had to mainly rely on only one digging tool, the hoe. This meant that even though here were 10 on us only one of us could do substantial work at any one time. When the pillars were finally straightened we lifted a single wooden plank up and Pak Awang helped us to fasten it onto the pillars. He then went off as he had to continue his work. We couldn't advance without him so we had to return back to the Pink House.

After Afternoon Construction
The construction process was tedious and frustrating especially when we had to adjust the depth of the hole or remove or move the pillars but at least we made some progress on this project.

We then conducted a meeting with the WWF staff back at the Pink House we talked about the upcoming project and made sure we had all the materials and logistics.

The meeting concluded and we had dinner in the Pink House.

As a side note the barber shop that we helped to construct yesterday has been completed by the locals.

Completed Barber Shop

That's all from today! Look forward to another full day of construction tomorrow!

Yours in Scouting,
Team Orion VIII
